As the weather gets colder, it means one thing when it comes to fashion: layering up.

This is the time for you to start experimenting with clothes because you are able to wear more, to stay warm and still be fashionable.

Here, your creativity comes into play because you want to look great in every layer.

There are some details to bear in mind when layering up. If this is your first time learning about them, don’t worry – they’re super easy to remember and apply to your dressing habits straight away!

Volume is important

Try to avoid looking like a teddy bear by evaluating the thickness of the clothing used, if the weather conditions allow you to.

Select only one piece that is bulky, and use lighter pieces to balance out the whole look.

For example, if you choose to wear a chunky jumper, pair with it a trench coat. Or you have a teddy coat, which is huge and snuggly, wear it together with thinner fabric clothing. In this manner, you will feel lighter, comfortable and have a polished look.

Consider the length

A layered outfit looks best when all the layers have the same length.

The outer layer should be the longest since it creates a well-proportioned look. Also, you can never go wrong with matching the length of hemlines, quite easy and effective trick to create a stylish outfit.

You can make different lengths work if there’s a massive contrast between them, by wearing an outer piece that is shorter than your inner one.

Play with patterns

If you have always wanted to attempt wearing clashing prints, now is the time. With wearing multiple articles of clothing, makes it easier to incorporate different styles and patterns in one look.

There are a couple of ways to mix and match prints:

  • By colours.
  • By the same print, but different colours. In other words, a more complex version of monochromatic look.

If you have no idea how to start, there is a couple of prints that go well together: leopard + plaid, polka dots + floral.

Remember to balance out the size of the actual prints.

Bring your summer clothes back

The easiest and most practical way to prolong your summer wardrobe’s life is to layer it up with some autumnal pieces!

You will just need a staple piece, like a jumper or a turtleneck top, to layer it up with a summery skirt or a dress. Sometimes, this method can help you to create the most exciting outfits.

No need to shop for new looks every time! At this time, we should develop a ‘cost per wear’ mindset.

Finishing touches

If you struggle to put an outfit together, and would just literally throw anything on, let me tell you that to look stylish is not that hard!

If you do find yourself at a crossroad, think of ‘less is more’. If you’re unsure about a certain detail in your outfit, don’t wear it.

There is such a thing as too many layers, ask yourself whether they are functional and do you feel comfortable in the whole outfit.

Don’t forget to make sure every layer looks great and refined. Think of each piece as an outfit itself and consider if it would stand alone and still look great.

Layering outfits can be an exciting way to discover your personal style and learn more about yourself. It can be challenging, but take it as an opportunity to get to know fashion. There are so many ways to look stylish, just seek for inspiration. But most importantly, have fun with it.
